Long term management of Asthma Education

Held on Friday 9th June 2023, an interactive, 60-minute event to ensure that healthcare professional teams across West Yorkshire are aware of the ICSThub Respiratory self-management apps, and how they can be utilised and shared across West Yorkshire.

The expert panel included:

• Dr Katherine Hickman – GP & Respiratory Lead for West Yorkshire
• Patrick Heaton – Medicines Optimisation Advisor & Practice Pharmacist
• Dr Simon Barry – Respiratory Consultant & National Respiratory Clinical Lead for NHS Wales

In former guidelines, it was acceptable for SABA monotherapy to be used for patients with mild, intermittent asthma. After the NRAD report, it was established that SABA monotherapy is not appropriate for any patients with Asthma.

And the reason – without steroids, airway inflammation build and builds, until an inevitable exacerbation. Short acting bronchodilators do not dampen inflammation.
